Modern Facilities, New Turf, Floodlights: Lafia City Stadium Ready For League Action

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Tuesday inspected the final phase of the ongoing renovation of the Lafia City Stadium, located in the Bukan-Sidi area of Lafia, the state capital, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The inspection visit, which formed part of the Governor’s routine oversight of key infrastructure projects, saw him accompanied by senior government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Shuaibu Labaran Magaji (SAN). The inspection team was conducted around the facility by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, alongside the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, and other sports stakeholders.

Renovation works at the stadium have reached about 99 per cent completion. Governor Sule expressed satisfaction with both the quality of work and the pace of execution, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to delivering a modern, standard sports facility that meets national and international requirements.

The extensive upgrade includes the construction of a Governor’s comfort room equipped with modern facilities, new technical benches for teams and match officials, replacement of the playing turf, installation of floodlights to enable night matches, and the provision of a high-capacity power generating set. Other components of the project include the remodelling of home and away locker rooms, redesign and enhanced security of the VVIP and VIP stands, reconstruction of the retractable tunnel, and comprehensive beautification of the entire stadium complex.

Contractors handling the project disclosed that work would be completed by Wednesday, February 5, 2026, ahead of Nasarawa United’s next Nigeria Premier Football League fixture against Bayelsa United in Lafia.

Governor Sule noted that the upgraded stadium would restore its status as a premier sporting venue while positioning Nasarawa State as an emerging hub for sports tourism in Nigeria. He commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and the contractors for adhering to timelines and delivering quality work, expressing confidence that the facility would be fully operational before the state’s teams resume league engagements.

Earlier, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, thanked the Governor for his consistent support for sports development in the state. He explained that the renovation was undertaken in response to directives by the Nigeria Premier Football League requiring clubs to upgrade their home grounds to meet approved standards.

Lafia City Stadium is a multi-purpose sports facility and has, over the years, served as a preferred venue for sporting events and programmes hosted by various stakeholders across the country.
