Moroccan Authorities Arrest Algerian Cameramen, Fans After Marrakech Violence

Moroccan authorities have arrested cameramen from an Algerian television channel as well as officials of the Algerian Press Agency following incidents of vandalism at the Marrakech Stadium during the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash between Nigeria and Algeria, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The arrests came in the aftermath of Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to the Super Eagles, a result that saw Nigeria advance to the semifinals of the competition. 

According to reports from local security sources, the detained media personnel were allegedly involved in acts of vandalism within the stadium precinct.

In addition to the media operatives, a number of Algerian supporters were also apprehended for unruly conduct. 

Witnesses said the trouble began shortly after the final whistle, with sections of Algerian fans reportedly attacking Nigerian players and supporters, leading to a breakdown of order in parts of the stadium.

Moroccan security forces intervened swiftly to restore calm, preventing the situation from escalating further. 

No serious injuries were officially reported, although the incidents caused temporary disruption as players and fans were escorted to safety.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to review reports from match officials and Moroccan authorities as investigations continue into the disturbances.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to the semifinals, while Algeria exit the tournament amid controversy both on and off the pitch.
