Morocco, A Big Threat To AFCON 2027 - Co-hosts

The preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in East Africa are facing scrutiny amid concerns that comparisons with Morocco could pose a significant challenge to the tournament’s success, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda were jointly awarded the hosting rights for the biennial competition, marking a historic return of the tournament to the region. 

However, the trio have continued to grapple with meeting key infrastructure requirements needed to stage an event of such magnitude.

Analysts warn that attempting to benchmark against Morocco’s hosting of the 2025 edition could prove counterproductive.

 The North African nation has spent over two decades investing heavily in world-class, World Cup-ready infrastructure, setting a standard that may be difficult to replicate within a short timeframe.

There are growing fears that if the East African nations focus on emulating Morocco’s architectural scale and grandeur rather than prioritising functional and sustainable facilities, the project could face significant setbacks.

Instead, experts suggest that Morocco should serve as a long-term model of what Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda can aspire to become in the future, rather than an immediate benchmark.

With governments in the host nations already committing resources to upgrade stadiums, transport networks, and accommodation, questions are also being raised about the long-term value of such investments. 

Stakeholders are urging authorities to ensure that developments contribute to a lasting tourism and economic legacy, rather than becoming costly short-term symbols of ambition.

As preparations intensify, the success of AFCON 2027 in East Africa may ultimately depend on striking a balance between ambition and practicality.
