Morocco Captain Stuns Football World By Rejecting AFCON Title

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has publicly declined recognition as the winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that his team did not earn the title on the field of play, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender made the remarks after Morocco’s defeat to Senegal in the tournament final, despite a subsequent ruling by the Confederation of African Football that awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory.

Hakimi stated that he could not accept the title under such circumstances, stressing that Senegal deserved to be recognised as champions based on their performance during the match. He argued that accepting the trophy would undermine the principles of fair competition and diminish Senegal’s achievement.

“Football is about merit,” Hakimi said, emphasising that victories should be decided on the pitch rather than through administrative rulings. While acknowledging CAF’s authority, he reiterated his personal rejection of any outcome that contradicts the result of play.

The controversy follows a decision by CAF’s Appeal Board to overturn the initial result of the final after Senegal reportedly walked off during the match, leading to the forfeiture ruling in Morocco’s favour.

However, the decision has been strongly contested by the Senegalese Football Federation, which has announced plans to challenge the verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Hakimi’s stance has attracted widespread attention across the football world, with observers noting the rarity of a player rejecting a major continental honour on grounds of sporting integrity.

Morocco entered the tournament as one of the favourites but fell short in the final, while Senegal’s performances throughout the competition had drawn widespread praise prior to the dispute.

The situation continues to spark debate within African football, raising broader questions about governance, fairness, and the integrity of competition outcomes.
