Morocco Vs Comoros: Match Preview and Kick-Off Time For AFCON Opener

By Our Reporter

Host nation Morocco will open the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday with a Group A encounter against Comoros, as the continent’s premier football tournament gets underway in Rabat, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Atlas Lions enter AFCON 2025 as one of the outright favourites, buoyed by home advantage and a strong reputation built on recent international success. However, with expectations high, Morocco also carry the weight of pressure as they seek only their second continental title and their first since lifting the trophy in 1976.

Despite consistent progress on the global stage, including deep runs at recent international tournaments, Morocco have found continental success elusive, failing to reach the AFCON semi-finals in more than two decades. Sunday’s opener therefore represents a crucial opportunity to set the tone for the tournament and justify their billing as title contenders.

Comoros arrive in Morocco as clear underdogs but with growing experience at Africa’s top level. The Coelacanths are competing in just their second AFCON, having made a memorable debut in 2021 by reaching the knockout stage, only 17 years after joining the Confederation of African Football.

Replicating that achievement would represent another major milestone for the island nation, while any positive result against the hosts would rank among the most significant moments in Comorian football history.

Morocco are expected to rely on their established attacking options to make a strong start. Youssef En-Nesyri is likely to spearhead the attack, bringing proven pedigree with 25 goals in 85 international appearances. He will be supported by Ismael Saibari, whose recent performances have added further depth and creativity to the hosts’ attacking play.

Although influential full-back Achraf Hakimi is currently sidelined through injury, he is expected to feature later in the tournament, leaving Morocco confident in the overall strength and balance of their squad.

Comoros, meanwhile, will look to Myziane Maolida for attacking inspiration, supported by the experience and leadership of captain Youssouf M’Changama. Defensive organisation and tactical discipline are expected to form the backbone of their approach as they attempt to frustrate one of Africa’s highest-ranked sides.

Morocco hold a clear advantage in the head-to-head record, having won three of their four previous meetings, with the other ending in a draw. Pre-match betting odds also strongly favour the hosts.

With a sold-out stadium and the atmosphere of an opening ceremony, Morocco will be aiming to deliver a commanding performance to launch AFCON 2025 in style.
