Motsepe Denies Changing AFCON Timing Because Of Europe

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has firmly dismissed claims that the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was altered due to pressure from Europe, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

CAF had announced, just before the start of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, that the continent’s flagship tournament will be staged every four years beginning from 2028.

The decision immediately sparked widespread speculation, with some suggesting that European football authorities influenced the change.

However, speaking during a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Motsepe strongly refuted the insinuations, insisting that Africa is fully capable of making independent decisions regarding its football calendar.

 “We have to stop the inferiority complex. We must move away from the idea that FIFA controls Africa,” Motsepe said.

“Do you mean Africa doesn’t have the capacity to speak for itself?” He further described suggestions that Europe dictated the new AFCON cycle as baseless.

 “People say AFCON was changed to four years because of Europe. That is absolute nonsense. Rubbish,” he added.

Motsepe emphasised that CAF’s relationship with global football bodies is built on mutual respect, not subordination.

“FIFA respects us. Let’s stop the inferiority complex. Sometimes we both compromise to accommodate the interests of football,” the CAF president concluded.

The clarification is expected to calm the ongoing debate surrounding CAF’s decision, which remains a major talking point across African and global football circles.
