Motsepe Opens Up On WAFCON 2026 Postponement

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has revealed that the postponement of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) played a significant role in the increase of the tournament's prize money, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

Speaking during the CAF Global Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday, Motsepe explained that the decision to reschedule the competition created an opportunity for CAF to secure improved financial backing for the tournament. 

According to the CAF president, the additional time allowed the continental football governing body to attract greater commercial support, resulting in a substantial increase in the prize money for the eventual champions. 

CAF earlier announced that the winners of the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco will receive a record $2 million, marking a major increase from previous editions. 

The move is part of CAF's broader commitment to improving women's football across Africa by increasing investment in competitions, enhancing player welfare, and raising the profile of the women's game on the continent.
