Portuguese coach José Mourinho has praised the performances of African teams at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that several of them can progress deep into the tournament, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking during a recent football discussion session, Mourinho highlighted the impressive display by Côte d’Ivoire despite their 2-1 defeat to Germany in a Group E encounter on Saturday.
The veteran tactician commended the resilience, tactical discipline and confidence shown by the African representatives, noting that their performances reflect the growing strength of football on the continent.
"Watching the strength and confidence displayed by the Ivory Coast players against Germany was truly impressive," Mourinho said.
"Not only Ivory Coast, but other African teams such as Morocco and others have also been performing exceptionally well. They are playing with composure, tactical discipline and a clear understanding of their game plans."
Mourinho added that the rise of African teams should not come as a surprise given the quality of players representing the continent at the highest level.
"Many of these players are already established stars in Europe and other top leagues around the world. Their performances at this World Cup are a reflection of their talent and experience," he said.
Germany secured a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in Toronto after coming from behind, with substitute Deniz Undav playing a decisive role in the turnaround for Julian Nagelsmann's side.
Despite the result, Mourinho was full of praise for the Ivorians, whose organized defensive structure and attacking threat caused significant problems for the German team throughout the match.
The former Champions League-winning coach believes the performances of African nations at the tournament have demonstrated their growing competitiveness on the global stage and could pave the way for a memorable World Cup campaign.
With several African teams still in contention for places in the knockout rounds, Mourinho maintains that the continent's representatives possess the quality, experience and determination to challenge the world's best and potentially make history in the competition.
