Newly elected President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), has unveiled his strategic vision for the organization. His mission centres on revitalising football in the region by promoting grassroots development, launching targeted youth competitions, crafting a robust marketing strategy to attract corporate sponsorship, and fostering unity and cooperation among member nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

“Nigeria must seize this opportunity,” Gusau emphasized.

 “It’s been years since a Nigerian last led WAFU—Dr. Amos Adamu held this role many years ago. Now that we’re back in this position, we must make a meaningful impact for the benefit of our football and our nation.”

He stated that a key priority is to expand competitive opportunities, especially for young players, in alignment with the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) broader goals.

“CAF wants to see more tournaments and stronger grassroots participation in every region. That’s the direction we’re taking.”

Gusau now joins a list of prominent Nigerians who have held the WAFU presidency, including the founding president, Mr. J.K. Tandoh, Chief Jonathan Ogufere, Col. Abdulmumini Aminu (rtd), and Dr. Amos Adamu, who served from 2008 to 2010.

Despite being the second smallest CAF zone by country count, with just seven nations, WAFU B continues to be a football powerhouse.

“Look at the recent U20 AFCON—four of the eight quarter-finalists came from our region: Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Sierra Leone,” he noted.

To sustain this momentum, Gusau stressed the need for financial backing: “We must secure the funds needed to host more tournaments. That’s why a solid marketing framework is crucial. By channelling resources into youth development, we’ll ensure a steady flow of talent that benefits both West African and African football at large.”
