NBBF Explains D'Tigress Road To 2024 Olympics Games

Nigeria senior women’s basketball team D'Tigress have qualified for the 2024 FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament after they finished as African champions and one of the top two teams from Africa alongside 2023 Afrobasket finalist, Senegal.
The D'Tigress equalled Senegal’s age-long record record of wining four consecutive women’s Afrobasket championship in Kigali in August as they defeated the record holders in a pulsating final.
The team will now compete with 14 other teams- mostly continental champions as well as host France and World champions, United States of America for a place in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament will take place in February 2024.
Below is a breakdown of how D'Tigress’ route to the qualifying competition as well other teams look like:
D’Tigress through to the Olympics qualifying tournament after finishing top 2 in Afrobasket. Let’s break it down: To qualify for the Olympic Games in 2024, women’s basketball teams from different regions have various paths:
In the Americas region, four national teams will compete in a pre-qualifying tournament, and the top two teams from this event will advance to the global Olympic qualifying tournaments in February 2024.
The USA, as the winner of the FIBA Women’s World Cup in 2022, and the best-ranked team from the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in 2023, are already qualified for the global Olympic qualifying tournaments in 2024.
In other regions (Africa, Asia/Oceania, and Europe), teams will qualify directly from their respective continental competitions: FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023, FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2023, and FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023.
In total, 16 teams will participate in the global Olympic qualifying tournaments in February 2024. Out of these, 12 teams, including the host (France) and the USA (as the World Cup winner), will secure a spot in the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.
Teams will qualify directly for the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments from each FIBA Women’s Continental Cup. 2 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023 4 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2023 6 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023. This means D’Tigress of Nigeria will be part of the Olympics qualifying tournament.
So, the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 will feature women’s basketball, with teams from various regions competing for a chance to represent their countries.
