NBF Targets Medal Sweep, Invites 40 Boxers For Final Camping Phase

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has invited 40 boxers to participate in the final phase of its training camp ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The selected athletes—comprising 20 male and 20 female pugilists—were largely drawn from finalists at the National Boxing Open Trials held in February. They represent all weight categories and are expected to compete for places on the national team.

According to the federation, official invitations have been sent to the athletes, their coaches, and technical officials. The camp is scheduled to open on May 1 at the Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah (Rtd) Boxing Hall, located within the National Stadium complex in Surulere, Lagos. Training sessions will begin the following day.

Chairman of the NBF Technical Committee, Babatunde Laguda, said the early camping initiative underscores the federation’s commitment to thorough preparation ahead of the Games.

“The NBF board, under the leadership of President Wale Edun, has prioritised early camping for all international competitions. This approach ensures that our athletes are adequately prepared ahead of major events like the Commonwealth Games,” Laguda said.

He added that the current phase of camping is critical, as only 10 boxers will eventually be selected from the 40 invited to represent Nigeria in Glasgow.

Also speaking, NBF Vice President Omonlei Imadu emphasised the federation’s determination to field only medal contenders. He noted that the selection process has been restructured to prioritise merit and performance.

“Our objective remains clear—10 boxers, 10 medals. The current leadership has introduced a new standard for athlete selection, moving away from past practices. With the mandate given to us by the National Sports Commission, we are focused on ensuring that only the best and most deserving athletes make the final team,” Imadu said.

Nigeria is expected to field 10 boxers at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.
