NBF Vows Merit-Based Selection As Commonwealth Games Trials Loom

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has announced plans to conduct open trials for boxers as part of preparations for the selection of the national team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

According to the federation, the trials will be open to pugilists across all weight categories, with the date and venue to be announced once logistical arrangements are finalized.

Vice President of the NBF, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, said the selection process would be transparent, credible, and merit-based, assuring athletes of equal opportunities to earn a place on the team.

“I make bold to say that the days of impunity in the selection of boxers for international competitions are over,” Imadu stated. “We have put mechanisms in place to ensure that every athlete is given a fair chance to make the final shortlist. The current NBF board is committed to changing the trajectory of boxing in Nigeria, and this trial is another opportunity to uphold the highest standards of credibility.”

Imadu further urged boxers and their coaches to intensify preparations ahead of the trials, stressing that only athletes who demonstrate both technical ability and mental readiness would be considered.

“Our objective is to select boxers who are truly prepared, those with the skills, discipline, and mindset to bring glory to the nation,” he said. “I urge coaches to ensure that their boxers are in top condition ahead of the screening process.”

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
