The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) could face a significant challenge in retaining Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, following reports that the Angolan Football Federation has submitted an improved bid for his services, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Chelle, 48, is entering the final year of the two-year contract he signed upon his appointment on January 7, 2025. His growing reputation on the continent has heightened interest in his availability, particularly after successive high-profile tournament performances.

The Franco-Malian tactician first drew widespread acclaim at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he guided Mali to an impressive campaign marked by fluid, attacking football. That performance paved the way for his appointment as Nigeria’s head coach.

At the 2025 AFCON, Chelle built on that reputation. Harnessing the depth of talent within the Super Eagles squad, he deployed an expansive, high-intensity style that propelled Nigeria to a bronze medal finish. The team emerged as the tournament’s most prolific attacking side while also recording crucial clean sheets during the knockout stages.

Such achievements have not gone unnoticed. Chelle was reportedly approached by both Tunisia and Angola in the aftermath of the competition. While Tunisia have since resolved their coaching situation, Angola remain in the market and are said to have renewed their pursuit with a substantially improved offer.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau has publicly expressed satisfaction with Chelle’s performance. However, he indicated that formal discussions over a contract extension would not commence until the final six months of the coach’s current deal—a stance that could leave room for rival federations to intensify their efforts.

Beyond national team interest, Chelle has also been linked with a potential move to Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1. His recent change of representation has further fueled speculation about his long-term plans, particularly as he has previously spoken openly about his ambition to one day coach at the highest level of European club football, including clubs such as Real Madrid CF.
