NFF Focuses On Revamping Domestic League, Emphasizes Referee Development

Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has outlined ambitious measures taken by his administration to improve the country's domestic league, particularly emphasizing the development of referees, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In discussing the federation's achievements so far, Gusau remarked, “We have worked to create policies aimed at enhancing our domestic league. Addressing the barriers that previously hindered proper organization took time, but it was necessary.”

One of the key reforms has involved addressing long-standing grievances among match officials, such as delayed payments and insufficient training.

Gusau highlighted the critical role referees play in maintaining the league's credibility and fairness, stating,

“No matter how strong your teams are, if the referees do not perform correctly, it leads to frustration.”

To tackle these issues, the NFF has implemented training programs and introduced new talent, including 12 referees under the age of 20 now officiating in the Premier League.

Gusau praised their performance, noting that no complaints have been received about the young referees.

He added, “We must encourage our youth, as this is the only way to address the concerns Nigerians are expressing.”

The NFF is also committed to enhancing Nigeria's representation at international tournaments.

Gusau expressed disappointment that only one Nigerian referee made the list for the upcoming CHAN, attributing this to a lack of preparation.

However, he remains optimistic that the inclusion of talented young referees in the league will strengthen Nigeria's presence in global football officiating in the coming years.
