NFF Insists It Has ‘Strong Case’ In FIFA Petition Against DR Congo

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) insisted it has a strong case in the petition written to FIFA over the alleged use of ineligible players by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during the final round of the African qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Super Eagles were defeated 4–3 on penalties by DR Congo in the CAF playoff final held in Morocco in November 2025, after the match ended level in regulation and extra time. The result secured DR Congo’s place as Africa’s representative at the FIFA Intercontinental Playoff scheduled to take place in Mexico in March 2026.

Following the defeat, the NFF lodged a complaint with world football’s governing body, alleging that DR Congo fielded players who were not eligible under FIFA regulations. The federation is seeking DR Congo’s disqualification and is asking that Nigeria be reinstated as Africa’s representative in the intercontinental playoff.

Speaking on the matter, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said the decision to approach FIFA was made after thorough internal deliberations and a review of the relevant regulations.

“We believe we have a strong case,” Dr. Sanusi said. “We do not pursue matters that we consider an exercise in futility.”

He confirmed that the federation has completed all necessary submissions and is now awaiting FIFA’s ruling.

“As far as we are concerned, we have presented a solid case and are waiting to hear FIFA’s decision regarding the issues we have raised,” he added.

The petition, if upheld, could have far-reaching consequences for the outcome of the playoff and Africa’s representation at the final stage of the World Cup qualification process.
