NFF Issues Strong Warning To Chelle

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has cautioned Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle against entertaining offers from rival suitors amid growing speculation about his future and an impending ruling linked to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Chelle, 48, was appointed in January 2025 following the dismissal of Jose Peseiro and the resignation of Finidi George after a disappointing run in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Under Chelle’s leadership, Nigeria finished second in CAF Qualification Group C behind the South Africa national football team to secure a playoff berth. However, the Super Eagles fell short in the decisive tie, losing 4–3 on penalties to the DR Congo national football team at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on November 16.

Despite uncertainty surrounding his long-term position, the NFF retained Chelle for the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria recorded group-stage victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda before defeating Tanzania 4–0 in the Round of 16 and Algeria 2–0 in the quarter-finals. The Super Eagles’ campaign ended in the semi-finals after a 4–2 penalty defeat to hosts Morocco, but they secured third place with a 4–2 shootout win over Egypt.

NFF Warns Against Potential Exit

Amid reports linking Chelle with the vacant Angola national team position — following the dismissal of Patrice Beaumelle — the NFF has reportedly reminded the coach of his contractual obligations.

Sources within the federation indicated that any unilateral decision to terminate his agreement would require financial compensation. An official stressed that Chelle remains under contract and is not permitted to negotiate with other national teams or clubs without proper clearance.

The warning comes as further reports suggest Beaumelle is in discussions with Espérance de Tunis after Angola’s underwhelming AFCON campaign.

Federation Confident Ahead of FIFA Verdict

While questions persist regarding Chelle’s future, the NFF has struck a confident tone concerning Nigeria’s pending case before FIFA.

General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi publicly maintained that the federation would not have pursued the matter without strong legal grounds, expressing optimism as they await a final decision.

Within the squad, players are also monitoring developments closely. Midfielder Alex Iwobi acknowledged that the team remains hopeful despite the uncertainty surrounding the verdict.

As Nigeria awaits clarity from FIFA, attention now turns to whether Chelle will remain at the helm for the next phase of the Super Eagles’ rebuilding process — or whether external interest will test the federation’s resolve.
