NFF Optimistic About CAF's ₦10 Billion Windfall

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has expressed strong confidence that the Super Eagles will go on to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following their 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarterfinals, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The win has set up a semifinal clash against tournament hosts Morocco, scheduled for Wednesday in Casablanca.

Speaking to BSN Sports in Mohammedia, Morocco, Gusau said he is convinced the Super Eagles have the focus, unity and determination required to overcome the Atlas Lions and lift the continental title.

According to the NFF president, the team’s steady improvement since arriving for the tournament three weeks ago has been evident, particularly in their cohesion and commitment.

“The key thing is the progress we have seen in the team since the start of the competition,” Gusau said. 

“The most important factor is the commitment of the players and their understanding of one another. It is really working for us.

“I can assure Nigerians that these boys are highly focused and determined to make the country proud. By the grace of God, they will return home with the trophy after the final.” He told BSN Sports.

Gusau drew parallels with Nigeria’s triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Falcons defeated Morocco in the final despite trailing 2–0 and facing intense pressure from the home crowd.

“If you recall what happened during the Women’s AFCON in Morocco, Nigeria still emerged victorious despite all the challenges,” he said. “We believe the same can happen again.”

He also praised the Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, for its support and encouragement of the team, noting that both players and coaching staff have assured Nigerians of their readiness to give everything on the pitch.

“The commitment and bonding I have seen in this team are at the highest level, and it is working for Nigeria,” Gusau added. “Once the whistle is blown, football is decided by the players and match officials on the field. Our boys are ready for that challenge.”

With the Super Eagles now among the final contenders, the NFF is also eyeing a significant financial boost. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a prize money of $7 million for the AFCON champions.

At the current exchange rate, the amount is valued at approximately ₦9.98 billion, close to ₦10 billion, representing a major windfall for Nigerian football should the Super Eagles lift the trophy.
