NOC Targets Completion of Abuja Headquarters by 2027, Eyes Strong Global Presence

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has set a 2027 completion target for its new headquarters in Abuja, signaling a renewed commitment to infrastructure development and closer collaboration with key sports stakeholders, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

NOC President, Engineer Habu Gumel, made the announcement in an interview with BSN Sports on Wednesday following a joint strategic meeting with the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and presidents of various national sports federations. The meeting was held at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) office in Abuja.

“If everything goes well, the headquarters building should be completed within two years. We’re optimistic about delivering it by 2027,” Gumel told BSN Sports.

He described the gathering as a milestone in fostering unity and alignment among Nigeria’s major sports institutions.

“I am particularly pleased that this was a joint meeting involving the NOC, the sports federations, and the Chairman and Director General of the National Sports Commission,” Gumel said. “It was a platform for open dialogue, where concerns were raised, questions answered, and consensus reached in the interest of Nigerian sports.”

Gumel emphasized the importance of continued support from the NSC to achieve the goals outlined during the meeting, including the successful completion of the NOC Secretariat and preparations for upcoming international competitions.

“Our discussions covered several upcoming events — the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, the African Youth Games in Angola, the National School Games in Nigeria, the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, and even early planning for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles,” he added. “We’re committed to ensuring Nigeria not only participates but excels.”

Gumel also highlighted the need for private sector involvement to bolster funding and logistics for qualification events and major competitions, stressing that a collaborative approach is essential to national success on the global stage.
