A spirited second half display wasn't enough to prevent Sunshine Stars FC from slipping narrowly to Kano Pillars in a closely fought NPFL Matchday 25 game at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The rescheduled game began on a rather sloppy pace for the boys who had to cope with early pressure from the hosts, with Mustapha Lawal called into action as early as the second minute.
The hosts capitalized duly on our sloppiness and took the lead through Jerry Alex' finish from a square play inside the opening 20 minutes.
Moments later, Kola Kalejaye wriggled his way into the Kano Piilars area in search of an equalizer, but couldn't keep his effort down while the hosts also hit the post before halftime.
Halftime changes were rang by the gaffer, Emmanuel Deutcsh and the game bursted into life with Sunshine Stars digging for a possible equalizer.
Azeez Ajagbe threaded Jide Jimoh through with a fine ball on the break, but the later could not just set up unmarked Leonard Ugochukwu inside the area, electing for a miscued a shot at a tight angle instead.
There was no breakthrough for Sunshine Stars despite posing much threats late on, a breather for the troubled Kano Pillars, who pocketed all the points.
Sunshine Stats will regroup at home to get the setback behind when they host Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan on Matchday 26.
Elsewhere, Katsina United defeat Abia Warriors 2-1 at Mohammed Shehu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.
Godwin Obaje opening scoring for the visiting side Abia Warriors in the 10th minutes, while Mustapha Salisu netted a brace for Chanji Boys at 42nd and 58th minutes respectively.
