NSC Affirms January 2026 Election Date, Rules Out Third Term For NBBF President

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has directed the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to adhere strictly to its constitution, reaffirming that no federation president is permitted to seek a third term in office, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

An insider informed BSN Sports that in a letter addressed to NBBF President Musa Kida, the NSC clarified that the federation’s next board elections will take place in January 2026.

 It further stated that the tenure of the current board, which began on January 31, 2022, will officially end on January 31, 2026—effectively ruling out any extension or attempt at a third term.

The correspondence, according to sources familiar with its content, was issued to dispel mounting uncertainty regarding the federation’s electoral timeline, as well as speculation over whether the NSC would permit a third-term bid.

Rumours have circulated suggesting that Kida, who first assumed office in 2017 and has served two four-year terms, may be seeking to extend his leadership beyond the constitutional limit. Some stakeholders have also argued that the current board’s tenure should expire in October 2026, citing the date of its inauguration by the former Ministry of Sports, despite the election taking place earlier in January 2022.

The NSC’s latest directive appears to lay the matter to rest, as stakeholders now await the federation’s formal compliance with the commission’s position.
