The National Sports Commission (NSC) has charged Nigerian athletes to deliver strong performances at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, urging them to uphold the country’s reputation on the global stage, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, NSC official Hon. Olopade highlighted the importance of discipline, unity, and determination, describing the competition as a key opportunity for Nigeria to reaffirm its status in international athletics.

“The entire nation stands firmly behind you,” he said. “We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud.”

Olopade also revealed plans to be present in Gaborone during the event, noting that his attendance underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to sports development. He urged the athletes to target podium finishes while also securing qualification spots for future global championships.

A 24-member Nigerian contingent will compete at the event, with the NSC assuring the team of full institutional support, alongside encouragement from Nigerians at home and abroad.

The team departed on Monday aboard Ethiopian Airlines, although some athletes are expected to join the squad in Botswana from their respective international training bases.

Nigeria will compete in all six relay events at the championship, scheduled to take place from May 2 to May 3, 2026. The competition also serves as a qualifying pathway for the World Athletics Championships Beijing 2027, adding further significance to the event.
