The National Sports Commission has unveiled a team of ambassadors for 2026 Commonwealth Games, in a move aimed at strengthening Team Nigeria’s preparations for the global multi-sport event, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The announcement reflects a strategic effort by the commission to combine administrative experience, athlete representation, and corporate support as Nigeria targets a strong showing in Glasgow.
Among those appointed are seasoned sports administrators, including Mallam Saleh Ahmadu, Amos Adamu, Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut, and Gbenga Elegbeleye. All have previously served as Director General of the NSC and bring decades of experience in sports governance and administration.
The ambassadorial list also features accomplished former athletes, notably Olympic gold medallist Daniel Igali and Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborodudu, alongside Tajudeen Ogunbade, Khadijat Sulaiman, and Victor Iroele. Their inclusion is expected to provide mentorship and inspiration to competing athletes.
In addition, the initiative incorporates institutional representation, with participation from Premium Trust Bank and the Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller General Wale Adeniyi.
Officials say the selection underscores a holistic approach to preparation, leveraging technical expertise, leadership experience, and athlete insight to enhance performance outcomes.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, bringing together thousands of athletes from about 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. The Games will feature a streamlined programme of 10 sports, including athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling, and gymnastics, with full integration of para-sports to promote inclusivity.
The unveiling of the ambassadors signals renewed intent by the National Sports Commission to bolster athlete support systems, strengthen international competitiveness, and elevate Nigeria’s profile on the global sporting stage.
