NSC Targets Major Revamp of Moshood Abiola Stadium With N18.775bn Budget

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has earmarked N18.775 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the main bowl of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, following growing concerns over the deteriorating condition of the facility’s playing surface, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The stadium’s turf has come under heavy criticism in recent months, with stakeholders describing it as unfit for competitive matches. Investigations by The Sun newspaper reveal that frequent non-sporting activities, including large-scale religious programmes and other events, have significantly contributed to the wear and tear of the pitch. Critics argue that despite substantial revenue generated from such activities, little has been reinvested into the maintenance of the complex.

According to details contained in the NSC’s annual budget proposal submitted to the National Assembly and obtained by The Sun, the N18.775 billion allocation is designated for the “rehabilitation and upgrading of the main bowl (Phase 1),” classified as an ongoing project.

In addition to the main bowl upgrade, the Commission has proposed N50 million for the provision of alternative independent power supply through a solarisation project. The initiative, which includes the installation of power banks, is expected to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to Packages A and B of the stadium complex, while reducing diesel consumption and operational costs.

The budget estimates also include N2.77 billion for the procurement of modern medical equipment for the Commission’s clinics, and N5.8 billion for the completion of a High Performance Centre aimed at enhancing athlete preparation and performance.

The latest allocation comes amid concerns over repeated spending on the stadium’s rehabilitation under successive administrations. Previous efforts included high-profile agreements spearheaded by former Sports Minister Sunday Dare in collaboration with industrialist Aliko Dangote, as well as initiatives undertaken during the tenure of former minister John Enoh.

Despite these interventions, stakeholders continue to question the sustainability of maintenance structures at Nigeria’s premier sports facility.
