NSF 2022: Team Bayelsa Concludes Athletics Trials

As part of efforts to ensure a good outing for Bayelsa State at the 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State, the Bayelsa State Athletics Association on Thursday concluded its trials to select athletes to represent the State at the country's Olympic games.

The trials which took place at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa was witnessed by the Director New Media to Governor Douye Diri and vice chairman of the association, Dr Kola Oredipe alongside other officials of the sports council.

At the completion of the trials in 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres male and female, Godah Victory outwitted her opponent with 11:62 sec having ran 11:44 sec, as Edet Miriam Basssey finished second on 11:64,Palmer Ejiro could only manage third on 11:94 sec an improved performance compared to the heat.

The men's 100 metres event winner Ayebide Kingsley ran a best time of 9:93 sec, while Oyeintoneka Ebid came second with 10:25 sec, Nwamere Donald came third with a mark of 10:31.sec.

Johnson Nnamani in the 400 metres raced 46:32 sec, his closet opponent Ogazi Samuel claimed 46:71 sec as Caleb Joshua finished third with 46:73, while Faith Dennis in women's event clocked 54:16 sec, Odigbo Rita ran 55:14 sec, Ofem Nairo 55:47 sec.

Reacting to the performances of the athletes, Chairman of the Bayelsa Athletics Association Godwin Ogohogho, said the state is prepared to present it's best athletes in Asaba, pointing out that this year's spectacle would be the best for the State.

He noted that with charge by the governor and the level of preparation put in place by the athletes, he is optimistic of finishing strong on the medals table, maintaining that the target of the association is to discover more talents from the grassroots.

Two athletes, Godah Victory and Ayebide Kingsley said they are impressed with the outcome of the trials, assuring Bayelsans of a podium finish in Asaba, Delta State.

The 21st National Sports Festival will begin on the 28th of November to 10th of December, 2022.
