National League Sparks Renewed Hope for Futsal Development

After years of limited structured competitions and minimal domestic activity, futsal in Nigeria appears poised for a resurgence following the successful staging of the inaugural National Futsal Super League in Kaduna, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Held from 26 January to 1 February 2026, the groundbreaking tournament brought together 32 teams from across the country, offering a rare national platform for players, coaches and match officials to showcase their abilities in the fast-growing indoor format of the game.

The competition was organised under the leadership and coordination of Shamsudeen Tijanni Yusuf, whose efforts were instrumental in delivering the week-long event. Technical support was provided by Musa Dung Davou, a CAF/FIFA-accredited referee, further reinforcing the tournament’s professional standards.

In its post-event assessment, the National Sports Commission commended the initiative, noting that competitions of this nature play a vital role in strengthening grassroots participation, enhancing technical development, and creating sustainable pathways for emerging sports.

The success of the Kaduna tournament is widely viewed as a significant step toward re-establishing structured futsal competitions in Nigeria and laying the foundation for long-term growth of the sport nationwide.
