Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has appointed Wilfred Ndidi as the new captain of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, following the retirement of former skipper William Troost-Ekong, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to reports , the decision was taken after Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football two weeks ago, leaving a leadership vacancy in the squad on the eve of the tournament.

Ndidi, one of the most experienced players in the current squad, will be assisted by Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi, who have been named vice-captains. Star striker Victor Osimhen has also been included in the leadership group as the fourth captain.

The leadership structure is intended to ensure strong on-field guidance across key areas of the team, from midfield to attack, as Nigeria navigate the demands of the continental competition. The appointments are expected to be formally communicated to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the players before the tournament begins.

The Super Eagles will open their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on December 23, two days after the competition kicks off on December 21. Nigeria head into the tournament with high ambitions, seeking to improve on their runner-up finish at the last edition, where they were defeated 2–1 by hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
