Ndidi Faces Suspension Threat Ahead of Crucial Istanbul Derby

By Admin

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is facing the prospect of a one-match suspension in the Turkish Süper Lig as disciplinary concerns mount ahead of a crucial fixture for Beşiktaş, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian midfielder has accumulated three yellow cards this season and will incur an automatic one-game ban if he receives another booking in Sunday’s high-profile Istanbul derby against Fenerbahçe.

League regulations stipulate a suspension after four cautions.

Ndidi’s bookings this campaign came in matches against Eyüpspor, Göztepe, and Kasımpaşa, placing him on the brink of disciplinary action at a pivotal stage of the season.

Since joining Beşiktaş, the 26-year-old has established himself as a central figure in the squad under manager Sergen Yalçın. He has started 20 of the 21 matches he has been available for, underlining his importance to the team’s structure and consistency in midfield. Ndidi also serves as vice-captain, further emphasizing his leadership role within the side.

However, his involvement this season has not been without interruptions. He missed a December fixture against Rizespor while representing Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. An injury sustained during international duty subsequently sidelined him for consecutive league matches in January, and he was later granted compassionate leave in February.

Ndidi’s situation mirrors a broader pattern among Nigerian internationals in European leagues, where players such as Paul Onuachu and Victor Osimhen have also faced suspensions this season due to yellow card accumulation.

The timing of a potential suspension could prove significant for Beşiktaş, who are aiming to maintain momentum in the league standings. Ndidi’s absence would represent a considerable setback, given his defensive stability and influence in midfield.

Attention will now turn to the derby against Fenerbahçe, where Ndidi must navigate a fine disciplinary line. Avoiding a booking would ensure his availability for the subsequent clash with Antalyaspor and allow Beşiktaş to retain their preferred midfield setup during a critical phase of the campaign.
