New Framework Set To End Transfer Disputes in Nigerian Weightlifting

The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation has announced the completion and submission of a new framework aimed at regulating athlete transfers, in a move designed to address longstanding disputes within the sport, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The report, prepared by a specially constituted committee, represents a key step in the federation’s efforts to improve transparency, streamline administration, and promote fairness in the movement of athletes across states and clubs.

The initiative was driven by the President of the federation, Ibrahim Abdul, whose leadership has focused on resolving recurring conflicts linked to athlete transfers, particularly during major competitions.

The committee, chaired by Steve Olarinoye, with Innocent Nwankwo as deputy chairman, was mandated to develop a comprehensive and enforceable set of guidelines. Other members included Zanna Umar, Omolola Tijani, Sefiya Onabaye, Mary Osifo and Melvina Apeh.

For years, disputes over athlete eligibility and transfers—especially during events such as the National Sports Festival, National Youth Games and national championships—have posed challenges for stakeholders.

According to the federation, the newly developed guidelines introduce a structured and transparent system that safeguards the interests of athletes, state associations, and the governing body. The framework also seeks to regulate international transfers more effectively, ensuring compliance with established standards and protecting national interests.

Speaking on the development, Olarinoye said the committee adopted a thorough approach, aligning its recommendations with international best practices and comparable systems in other sports. He expressed confidence that the guidelines would provide clarity and long-term stability to athlete transfers.

The report has now been formally submitted and will be presented for ratification at the federation’s Annual General Meeting later this year.

The NWF described the development as a reflection of its commitment to institutional reform, good governance, and the sustainable growth of weightlifting in Nigeria.
