New NPL Board Propose Abridged League Format For 2023-24 Season
By Gbenga Gboyega
Following the recorded success of the 2023 abridged Nigeria Premier League season, which saw two groups of 10 teams play concurrently, the newly inaugurated board for the League has now proposed a repeat for the forthcoming domestic campaign as an option, BSNsports.com.ng reports.
The Gbenga Elegbeleye-led board proposed two league formats to the clubs, which would feature either a 20-team full-season format or an abridged format of two groups (A & B).
Although both propositions are based on the season kicking off on the 26th of August 2023, the 'abridged' format is expected to run till the 14th of April 2024, while the full season is expected to run till the 9th of June 2024.
The development from the board has met mixed concerns with some quarters noting a supposed sync with global structures and calendar, while others expressed their reservations regarding having a winner in the regular season and another after the championship playoffs.
However, one certain detail regardless of which proposition gets adopted, the 2023-24 league campaign will start on the last weekend in the month of August 2023.
