Niger Potters Clinch Nigerian Basketball League Spot Despite Final Loss

By Admin

Niger Potters Basketball Club has earned promotion to the Nigerian Basketball League after finishing top at the Bago Division 1 Tournament, which concluded in Minna, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The competition marked a significant milestone, as it signalled the return of organised basketball to the city’s newly renovated indoor sports hall revived after 14 years of abandonment.

Five teams from across the country contested the lone qualification slot for the National Division One Tournament. Although Niger Potters were edged 60–59 by Alice Gombeurwa Foundation (AGF) in a tightly contested final, the hosts secured the overall ticket through a head-to-head advantage. They finished the tournament level on seven points with AGF and 313 Warriors but prevailed based on superior results in their previous matchups.

Following the team’s qualification, the Chairman of the Niger State Sports Commission reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Potters as they gear up for the national league season.

Tournament organisers highlighted that despite initially expecting 19 teams, only five participated due to limited sponsorship. They called on private and public stakeholders to invest more robustly in Nigerian basketball to strengthen development at all levels.
