Nigeria Begins World Relays Preparations As Camp Opens in Lagos

Team Nigeria’s preparation for the upcoming World Relays Championship officially begins today as the national camp opens in Lagos ahead of the competition in Gaborone, Botswana, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The one-week camping programme will be supervised by the Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Gabriel Okon, as athletes fine-tune their readiness for the global event scheduled for May 2–3, 2026.

A strong contingent of home-based athletes has been invited across the relay events. In the men’s 4x100m squad are Enoch Adegoke, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Chidera Ezeakor, and Tejire Godwin.

The men’s 4x400m team includes Ezekiel Enoh Azukwo, Gafari Badmus, Victor Ime, Samson Nathaniel, and Emmanuel Ojeli.

In the women’s 4x100m event, Jenifer Chukwuka, Miracle Ezechukwu, Rosemary Nwankwo, and Maria Thompson Omokwe are expected in camp.

The women’s 4x400m squad features Anita Enaruna, Patience Okon George, Toheebat Jimoh, Taiwo Mary Kudoro, Jecinta Lawrence, Esther Okon, and Sekiru Adewale Adeyemi.

Foreign-based athletes are expected to link up with the team upon arrival in Gaborone for the championship.

Meanwhile, African athletes delivered impressive performances at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix over the weekend, signaling strong form ahead of upcoming competitions.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, Anthony Edward Jr claimed victory in 13.61 seconds, narrowly ahead of Yusuf Badawi, who posted 13.76. Nigeria’s Musa Wisdom finished third in 14.34.

The women’s 400m saw a standout run from Femi Adekoya, who clocked 50.28 seconds to win, ahead of Mercy Chebet (51.38). Nigeria’s Patience Okon George secured third place in 51.70, underlining her consistency at the elite level.

In the men’s 400m, Justice Oratile produced an impressive 44.92 finish to take top spot, holding off Ruathdel Nhial Gnange (45.53), while Nigeria’s Samson Nathaniel completed the podium in 45.89.

With preparations now underway and performances on the rise, Team Nigeria heads into the World Relays with renewed optimism and competitive momentum.
