Nigeria Book Quarter-Final Place Ahead of Rwanda Clash

Nigeria’s senior men’s handball team, the Golden Arrows, have made an impressive start to their campaign at the 27th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup in Kigali, Rwanda, recording back-to-back victories to secure early qualification for the quarter-finals, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Nigeria opened their Group A campaign on Wednesday with a hard-fought 25–23 victory over Algeria at the Petit Stade, displaying composure and tactical discipline against one of the tournament’s traditionally strong sides. The Golden Arrows established early control of the contest in Thursday's game versus Zambia and went into the break with a slim advantage, built on a compact defensive structure and efficient finishing in attack.

Zambia attempted a late rally in the second half, but Nigeria held their nerve in the closing minutes to claim a deserved opening win and maximum points.

Key performances came from Faruk Yusuf, who led from the backcourt with authority and crucial goals, while John Shagari was effective on the left wing. Goalkeeper Michael Agbaji proved decisive with a series of important saves at critical moments, earning him the Man of the Match award.

Nigeria followed up that result with a commanding 36–18 victory over Zambia in their second group game, a dominant display that confirmed their place in the quarter-finals regardless of the outcome of their final group fixture.

With two wins from two matches, Nigeria now sit top of Group A, which also includes hosts Rwanda. The Golden Arrows will face Rwanda in their final group encounter as they continue their push for a podium finish.

The Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup also serves as a qualification tournament for the 2027 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship in Germany, adding further significance to Nigeria’s strong early showing.
