Nigeria-born striker Folarin Balogun delivered a standout performance, scoring twice in the first half as the United States Men's National Team (USMNT) opened their Group D campaign with an emphatic victory under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Balogun, who was eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents but ultimately committed his international future to the United States, once again demonstrated why he has become one of the key figures in the American national team setup.

The striker was at the centre of a dynamic attacking display as Pochettino's side imposed themselves from the opening whistle. The Argentine coach's tactical approach quickly took effect, with the United States creating several early opportunities through intelligent combination play involving Balogun, midfielder Weston McKennie and captain Christian Pulisic.

The breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute following sustained pressure from the Americans. A clever attacking move initiated by Pulisic found McKennie inside the area, and the resulting effort took a decisive deflection off Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla before finding the back of the net for an own goal.

The early advantage sparked an attacking masterclass from the USMNT, who continued to dominate possession and create chances. Balogun soon took centre stage, capitalising on the team's fluid attacking movement to score twice before halftime and effectively put the contest beyond the reach of their opponents.

His brace further underlined his growing importance to the national team. Since switching allegiance to the United States in 2023, Balogun has established himself as one of the country's most reliable attacking threats, bringing pace, movement and clinical finishing to the frontline.

The performance also offered another glimpse of the progress being made under Pochettino, who was appointed with the mandate of building a competitive side ahead of future major international tournaments. The former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager has emphasized an aggressive, high-pressing style of play, and his team executed that approach effectively throughout the match.

With three points secured from their opening fixture, the United States have taken an early step toward qualification from Group D, while Balogun's clinical display will further strengthen his reputation as one of the team's most influential players.

The convincing victory sends a strong message to their group rivals and highlights the growing confidence within a USMNT side aiming to make a significant impact on the international stage.Suggested Standfirst:
