By BSN Sports
Team Nigeria delivered another impressive performance on the continental stage, winning two gold medals and one silver at the NFL Flag American Football African Championships in Kenya to reinforce its status as one of Africa's leading flag football nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The strong showing comes as a major confidence boost for the Nigerian team ahead of the IFAF Flag Football World Cup scheduled to take place in Germany later this year.
Nigeria claimed gold in the women's category and the Under-13 mixed event, while the men's team settled for silver after a closely contested final against Egypt.
Reacting to the team's success, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, congratulated the athletes and officials, describing flag football as one of the country's fastest-growing sports with enormous potential.
Olopade commended the leadership of the Nigerian Federation of American Football (NFAF), led by President Babajide Akeredolu, for the federation's continued efforts in developing the sport.
"I want to salute the President of the Nigerian Federation of American Football, Babajide Akeredolu, and his entire board for this remarkable achievement. It demonstrates that Nigeria possesses exceptional talent across different sports, and with the right support and enabling environment, we can continue to achieve consistent success," Olopade said.
The NSC Director-General urged the federation to build on its success in Kenya as preparations intensify for the World Cup.
"I encourage the federation to use this tournament as a springboard ahead of the World Cup in Germany later this year. The National Sports Commission will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the team performs creditably on the world stage," he added.
Nigeria's performance in Kenya further underscores the country's growing reputation in flag football, with the federation hoping to translate its continental dominance into a strong showing at the forthcoming World Cup.
