Nigeria Drawn Against Morocco, Uganda, Senegal in World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s senior men’s national rugby sevens team, the Stallions, will face seven African nations in Uganda as they pursue qualification for the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3 competition, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Rugby Africa has confirmed Nigeria among eight teams scheduled to compete in the World Rugby SVNS 3 Qualifiers 2026, which will take place in Uganda from September 26 to 27.

The Stallions will line up alongside hosts Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal in the two-day tournament, with the winners securing the coveted qualification ticket to the global sevens circuit.

The competition was originally planned as a 12-team Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius but was postponed following the Ebola outbreak. Rugby Africa subsequently revised the competition format, with Uganda now set to host the eight-team SVNS 3 qualifying tournament.

The Africa Men’s Sevens tournament, however, remains on the calendar for Mauritius in October. South Africa, Kenya, hosts Mauritius and Burkina Faso are among the teams confirmed for that competition, with four additional participants still to be announced.

The Uganda tournament will also serve as the opening event of the 2026 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Series.

For Nigeria, the competition presents an important opportunity not only to secure a place in the World Rugby SVNS 3 2027 competition but also to strengthen the country’s position in African rugby.

The winner of the Uganda tournament will finish third in the African rankings, while the team that finishes eighth will occupy the final position among the participating nations.

The Stallions will therefore head to Uganda with qualification, ranking points and continental recognition at stake.

Nigeria will be aiming to produce a strong campaign and emerge as the tournament winners to secure a pathway to the global rugby sevens circuit.
