Nigeria’s judo team has arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, ahead of the 47th African Senior Judo Championships, as the country intensifies its quest for continental success and Olympic qualification under the framework of the International Judo Federation, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The championship, scheduled to take place from April 22 to 26 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, will bring together 260 athletes from 34 nations, comprising 159 men and 101 women. The scale of participation underscores the tournament’s status as one of the most competitive events on Africa’s judo calendar.

Proceedings will begin with the official weigh-in on April 23, followed by two days of competition from April 24 to 25. The opening day will feature contests in the women’s -48kg, -52kg, -57kg, and -63kg categories, as well as the men’s -60kg, -66kg, and -73kg divisions. Subsequent events, including additional weight classes, repechage rounds, and semi-finals, will be held on the following day.

Nigeria’s contingent heads into the competition after an intensive two-week training camp aimed at refining technique and sharpening competitive readiness. Preparations were further boosted by a visit from Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, who reaffirmed government support and emphasized the championship’s importance as a pathway to Olympic qualification. His message of discipline and commitment was echoed by team captain Kehinde Aremu, who described the visit as a significant morale boost.

The Nigerian squad features a blend of experienced competitors and emerging talents, including Audu Franca (-52kg), Ufot Immaculata (-57kg), Udeze Amara (-63kg), and Ekuta Enku (-63kg). The men’s team includes Agbo Michael (-66kg), Aremu Kehinde (-66kg), Aremu Taiwo (-73kg), Cyprian Miracle (-90kg), and Ipalibo Somina (+100kg).

In parallel with team preparations, referees and coaches from across the continent have participated in a technical clinic organized by the International Judo Federation, focusing on updated rules, officiating consistency, and athlete safety. The initiative is aimed at ensuring the competition meets global standards.

Beyond continental honours, the championship serves as a crucial ranking event with direct implications for Olympic qualification. For Nigeria, it represents both a test of recent progress and an opportunity to reinforce its standing within African judo.

Backed by structured preparation and institutional support, Team Nigeria enters the tournament with the ambition of translating readiness into podium finishes as the competition unfolds in Nairobi.
