Nigeria Eyes Qualification Spots As Olopade Motivates Relay Teams

Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to sports development while urging Team Nigeria athletes to compete with pride at the ongoing World Relays Championship in Gaborone, Botswana, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Olopade delivered the charge on Thursday while addressing athletes and officials after their final training session ahead of the competition.

He emphasized the importance of athletics to Nigeria’s sporting success, describing it as a key driver of empowerment and national development. Drawing from personal experience, Olopade noted that this marks his fourth appearance at the World Relays, having attended previous editions prior to his appointment as NSC Director General.

“The relays are a major event for Nigeria. At every major multi-sport competition, we look forward to strong performances in relay events,” he said. “Beyond this competition, it also serves as a qualifier for the World Championships, making it even more significant.”

He called on the athletes to give their best, urging them to compete not only for personal achievement but also for national pride.

“I appeal to you to do this for yourselves, for your country, for your states, and for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President’s message has always been clear—perform well and return to a grateful nation,” Olopade added.

The NSC Director General also conveyed the goodwill of the Commission’s Chairman, Shehu Dikko, who extended his best wishes to the team as they begin their campaign.

Team Nigeria is expected to compete in multiple relay events as they aim to secure qualification spots for upcoming global championships.
