Nigeria Football At A Turning Point As FIFA, CAF Back NFF Reform

FIFA has formally accepted the mass resignations of key officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), while reaffirming its commitment to working with the Nigerian government, the NFF and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on a comprehensive roadmap to reform the administration of football in the country, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The development followed a high-level meeting at FIFA House in Zurich, Switzerland, on Tuesday, where representatives of FIFA, CAF, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the NFF reviewed the ongoing leadership transition and the proposed restructuring of Nigerian football.

The meeting agreed that consultations and engagements should continue towards fine-tuning a reform roadmap covering the short, medium and long term.

According to the parties, the objective is to create an inclusive and properly structured NFF, supported by an enabling environment that promotes stability, transparency and effective administration, while positioning Nigerian football for greater success both on and off the pitch.

The discussions also focused on ensuring that any reform process is conducted in accordance with the applicable FIFA, CAF and NFF statutes, regulations and governance principles.

The Nigerian delegation was led by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and included NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade; former NFF President and former FIFA Council Member Amaju Pinnick, OFR, who attended in his official capacity as Special Adviser to the CAF President and Deputy Chairman of the FIFA Men's National Teams Competitions Committee; NFF Acting General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme; and NFF Director of Legal Services, Okey Obi, Esq.

CAF Second Vice-President Kurt Okraku and FIFA Director of Member Associations for Africa Gelson Fernandes were also part of the meeting.

Speaking after the engagement, Dikko said the discussions represented an important step towards rebuilding Nigerian football's administrative structures.

“Mutual engagement among the National Sports Commission, the NFF administration and the Confederation of African Football is ongoing with FIFA on the comprehensive reforms of Nigeria football, including agreeing a roadmap going forward in accordance with the relevant rules, regulations and Statutes,” Dikko said.

He added that there was “no doubt Nigeria Football will emerge much better and properly-structured after the conclusion of this process.”

The FIFA engagement comes at a critical period for Nigerian football following the recent departures of senior NFF officials and the suspension of the federation's planned electoral process.

With the leadership transition now being addressed through consultations involving FIFA, CAF, the NSC and the NFF, attention is expected to shift towards the composition, mandate and timeline of the reform process.

A key priority will be ensuring that the eventual structure of the federation enjoys broad stakeholder support and is capable of providing stable and accountable leadership for Nigerian football.

The outcome of the Zurich discussions is also expected to shape the next phase of the NFF's governance transition, including the eventual electoral process and the emergence of a new leadership structure.

For Nigerian football, the central challenge will be translating the ongoing high-level engagements into concrete reforms capable of strengthening administration, improving accountability and restoring confidence among stakeholders.
