Nigeria Leads Africa in Overseas Player Exports With 565 Professionals Abroad

Nigeria has cemented its status as Africa’s leading producer of football talent, surpassing regional rivals Ghana and Senegal in the latest global rankings of expatriate players, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to a recent international football migration report tracking players across 135 professional leagues worldwide, Nigeria now boasts 565 footballers playing abroad, placing the country among the world’s most influential exporters of football talent.

The report positions Nigeria behind only traditional football powerhouses such as Brazil, France, Argentina, Spain and England, underlining the growing global demand for Nigerian players.

Brazil remains the world’s largest exporter of football talent with 1,455 players competing overseas, followed by France with 1,275 and reigning world champions Argentina with 1,016.

However, Nigeria’s rapid rise has drawn significant attention across the football industry. Since 2021, the country has experienced a remarkable 60 per cent increase in player migration, adding 211 expatriate footballers to its global footprint.

The figures also highlight the attacking strength associated with Nigerian football development. Forwards account for the majority of Nigerian players abroad at 52.9 per cent, while midfielders represent 25.6 per cent, defenders 19.5 per cent and goalkeepers just 2 per cent.

The trend reinforces Nigeria’s growing reputation as a major source of attacking talent for clubs around the world.

As the international transfer market continues to expand — with only nine of the top 50 exporting nations recording a decline — Nigeria appears well positioned to strengthen its influence in global football in the coming years.
