Nigeria Misses Out On Historic African Championship

Nigeria’s men’s and women’s beach handball teams will not be part of the maiden edition of the African Beach Handball Nations Championship, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The inaugural tournament is scheduled to take place in Lomé, Togo, from April 24 to 27, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the sport on the continent. However, Nigeria will be absent from the historic competition.

In the men’s category, host nation Togo will compete alongside Benin Republic, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, and Mali.

The women’s event will feature Togo, Kenya, Mali, and Benin Republic.

Nigeria’s absence comes as a surprise, given the country’s growing involvement in handball development in recent years. 

The championship is expected to serve as a platform to promote beach handball across Africa and provide teams with valuable international exposure.

Meanwhile, participating nations will be aiming to make history as the first winners of the continental beach handball showpiece.
