Nigeria’s Super Eagles moved to the top of Group C following a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Tunisia in their second group match on Saturday night at the Fes Sports Complex, BSNSport.com.ng reports.
Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the 44th minute, rising highest to head home with precision and authority. The Super Eagles doubled their advantage shortly after the restart when captain Wilfred Ndidi powered in a header from an expertly delivered corner by Ademola Lookman.
Nigeria extended their lead through Lookman, the former African Footballer of the Year, who capitalised on a well-timed assist from Osimhen. Displaying composure and skill inside the penalty area, Lookman outwitted the Tunisian defence before firing a low shot past the helpless goalkeeper.
Tunisia responded in the 74th minute when Talbi pulled one back to reignite the contest. The North Africans further reduced the deficit late in the game, as Abdi converted a penalty in the 87th minute. However, Nigeria held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points.
Earlier in the day, Uganda and Tanzania played out a 1–1 draw in the opening Group C fixture.
With the results from both matches, Nigeria sit atop the Group C standings heading into the final round of group games scheduled for 31 December. The Super Eagles, African champions in 2013, will face Uganda, while Tunisia take on Tanzania in a decisive encounter.
