Nigeria Open Improved Bonus Talks With Chelle Ahead of Crucial World Cup Playoffs

By BSN Sports

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly in negotiations with Nigerian football authorities over an improved contract and revised bonus package, following a promising start to his tenure with the national team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Appointed in January 2025, Chelle has guided Nigeria to four wins and two draws in six matches, culminating in a resounding 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo that secured the team’s place in the World Cup qualifiers playoff round.

Veteran journalist Osasu Obayiuwana reports that the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, recently met with Chelle’s agent in Lagos to discuss a performance-based bonus structure and the settlement of outstanding allowances. The aim, sources say, is to ensure the coach remains fully focused on the high-stakes playoff fixtures against Gabon, with a potential final against either Cameroon or DR Congo on the horizon.

While Chelle’s current two-year contract remains intact and is expected to be fully activated if Nigeria secures a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, uncertainty lingers over his long-term future should the Super Eagles fail to progress.

The ongoing discussions reflect a broader commitment to reward performance while maintaining high expectations, as Nigeria looks to return to the global stage and rebuild its footballing stature under new leadership.

Super Eagles having qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco will battle Gabon in the semifinal where the winners will face winners between Cameroon and DR. Congo.
