Team Nigeria made a powerful statement on the opening weekend of the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships, clinching two medals in the women’s 50kg category as competition got underway in Cairo, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Esther Nworgu secured silver, while compatriot Rukayat Opeyemi Ajiboye claimed bronze, delivering a double podium finish for Nigeria on Saturday afternoon. The performances mark a strong start for the country at what is a historic edition of the championships—the first-ever World Para Powerlifting event hosted on African soil, running from October 9 to 18.

Nworgu and Ajiboye both displayed exceptional strength, determination, and technical skill in a fiercely contested field, narrowly missing out on the gold medal but firmly establishing Nigeria’s presence in the tournament.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, hailed the achievement, praising the athletes’ resilience and national pride. “Our athletes continue to make us proud, showing the world that Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with in para powerlifting,” Olopade said. “Their bright start in Cairo reflects the depth of talent, discipline, and dedication that define Nigerian sports. The NSC remains steadfast in providing the necessary support to ensure our champions keep soaring.”

The NSC also reiterated its commitment to fully supporting the team throughout the championship, as Nigeria aims for more medals in the coming days.
