in their first leg of the FIFA U20 Women's World qualifier.Â
The match was played at the Azam Stadium Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday.
With the win, Nigeria is 90 minutes away from qualifying for theÂ
2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia with the second leg coming up in Nigeria.
A first half penalty goal scored by striker Janet Akekoromowei who plays for Asisat Oshoala Academy in Lagos gave Nigeria the full three points away from home even as efforts by coach Christopher Danjuma
tutored Falconets to increase the tally in the second stanza proved abortive as the Burundians stood their grounds not to allow in more goals.
With this result, Nigeria is in a pole position to qualify for the global football fiesta in Colombia ahead of Burundi going into the second leg encounter billed for Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday, January, 20, 2024.
The winner over the two legs will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Colombia later in the year. Â
Nigeria has qualified for all but one edition since the competition started as FIFA U-19 Women’s Championship back in 2002 in Canada where Nigeria crashed out in the preliminary stage.
