Nigeria Pushes for Africa’s First-Ever Commonwealth Games with Final London Presentation

A high-level Nigerian delegation has arrived in London ahead of the final presentation in the country's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a historic effort that, if successful, would bring the event to Africa for the first time, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The delegation is led by Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General of the bid team, Hon. Bukola Olopade. The group is expected to make a decisive case to Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials on Wednesday, highlighting Nigeria’s readiness to deliver a world-class event in celebration of the Games’ centenary.

Nigeria’s bid enjoys the full backing of the Federal Government. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s strong support, pledging the nation’s commitment to meeting global standards in infrastructure, security, and event management.

Last week, the Commonwealth Games Bid Evaluation Team visited Nigeria, where they were received by top government officials including Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila. The visit was seen as a critical moment in the evaluation process and a chance for Nigeria to demonstrate its preparedness on the ground.

The London delegation also includes several notable figures: Hon. Sunday Dare, Special Assistant to the President on Public Communication and Presidential Spokesperson; Mallam Mainasara Ilo, Bid Coordinator; Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee; Hon. Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Arts and Culture; Mary Onyali, five-time Olympian and double Commonwealth Games gold medalist; and Eniola Bolaji, the current world number one para-badminton player.

Nigeria’s proposal emphasizes themes of inclusivity, legacy, and sustainable development. The bid envisions Games that not only showcases athletic excellence but also catalyzes cultural exchange, youth empowerment, and regional growth across Africa.

If successful, the 2030 Games would mark a defining moment in the Commonwealth's history — expanding its global reach and spotlighting Africa’s capacity to host major international events.
