Nigeria Rugby 101: Ojiakor Primary School Benefits From Programmes

By Gbenga Gboyega

Rugby in Nigeria has found its way to the grassroots as students of Ojiakor Primary School in Anambra State are to benefit from the programme, BSNSports.com.ng can report.

A representative from the Nigeria Rugby Federation on Monday visited Ojiakor Primary School, located in Adazi-Nnukwu Town in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, during their Physical Education period.

The representative was captured while introducing the students who came out in batches according to their levels (senior and junior), to the programmes and competitions planned by the country's Rugby Federation.

During the session, the students who adorned yellow tops, on red shorts with yellow stripes as school uniform, listened to their tutor who conveyed her tutorials in the Igbo language for easy communication.

In English, the tutor who was female tried to keep them quiet as she told them about the aim of her visit to the school, on behalf of the state and the country.

"I am a teacher just like your academics teacher, so I implore you to respect what I teach you without distractions.

"I am here on behalf of the Rugby Federation to scout for both male and female players that will develop enough to represent Anambra State and Nigeria in foreign-based competitions.

"Those chosen will go abroad to represent Nigeria in Rugby competitions beyond what you play around here in the school field." BSNSports.com.ng translates from Igbo.

The development consolidates the structure being built under the incumbent President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation - Ademola Are, following the recent successes experienced by the Nigeria National Rugby Union team.
