Nigeria Set Up Quarter-Final Clash With Angola After Rwanda Win

Nigeria’s Senior Men’s Handball Team, the Golden Arrows, delivered an assured performance to defeat host nation Rwanda 30–20 and finish top of Group A at the ongoing Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup in Kigali, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The victory capped a dominant group-stage campaign for Nigeria and secured a quarter-final meeting with Angola, who finished as runners-up in Group B.

Reacting to the result, Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, commended the team’s display and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to athlete welfare.

“When athletes are properly supported, results follow,” Olopade said. “This win and our consistent presence on the medals table reflect the solid foundation we have built since taking office. Athlete welfare remains central to our success.”

Hakeem Salami led Nigeria’s scoring with eight goals, while Yusuf Faruk added five. Iyor Tyer Sessugh and Dikko Ibrahim contributed three goals apiece, with Mohammed Mustapha and Rotibi Victor also getting on the scoresheet with two goals each, highlighting Nigeria’s balanced attacking effort.

Goalkeeper Michael Solomon was a key figure in the win, producing a series of crucial saves to frustrate the Rwandan attack, led by Yves Kayijamahe, who finished with 11 goals. Solomon’s performance earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the second time in three matches at the championship.

The Golden Arrows will now turn their attention to Sunday’s quarter-final clash against Angola as they continue their push for honours in the competition.
