Nigeria has officially entered the race to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja, positioning itself to become the first African nation in more than three decades to stage the prestigious motorsport event, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, announced the landmark move on Wednesday, calling it a historic step toward placing Nigeria firmly on the global sporting map.

In a statement released in Abuja, Dikko revealed that Opus Racing Promotions has been appointed as the country’s official representative for the bid.

“We are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as practicable not just as a sporting event, but as a catalytic driver of tourism, infrastructure development, youth engagement, and economic growth,” Dikko said. He added that hosting an F1 race would not only boost national pride and attract worldwide attention but also create thousands of jobs and significantly strengthen local infrastructure.
