Nigeria Suffers Heavy Loss In 2026 World Cup Qualifier

 Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup took a hit on Sunday after a commanding century from Jan Frylinck propelled Namibia to a 117-run victory in their opening match of the Africa Qualifier in Harare, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

After winning the toss, Nigerian captain Sylvester Okpe elected to field first, a decision that initially looked promising when his elder brother, Isaac Okpe, dismissed Malan Kruger for 11 runs in the fifth over. However, what followed was a batting masterclass from Kruger's opening partner, Jan Frylinck.

Frylinck smashed a blistering 134 off just 65 balls, hammering 15 fours and six sixes in a destructive innings that left Nigeria’s bowlers with few answers. He was finally dismissed in the 16th over via a sharp piece of fielding from Isaac Danladi and Sulaimon Runsewe, but the damage had already been done.

With additional contributions from Louren Steenkamp (51 runs) and the middle order, Namibia finished their innings on 235 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs.

In response, Nigeria’s batting lineup struggled to match the required run rate. Opener Sulaimon Runsewe top-scored with 28 before falling leg before wicket in the 11th over. Captain Sylvester Okpe added 24 runs but was caught by Nicol Loftie-Eaton as Nigeria's innings never found momentum.

The Yellow Greens could only manage 118 for 9 after 20 overs, falling well short of the target. Frylinck was named Player of the Match for his dominant display with the bat.

Speaking after the match, captain Sylvester Okpe admitted that Nigeria's bowling plans were not effectively executed.

“We didn't bowl according to our strategy, and Namibia capitalized on it,” Okpe said. “However, it was a good learning experience, and we’re looking forward to correcting our errors in the next match.”

Despite the defeat, Nigeria remains in contention and will next face Kenya—coached by former international Steve Tikolo—on September 30 at the Takashinga Sports Club in Harare.
