Nigeria To Release List Next Week As Coach Confident Of 2026 World Cup Ticket

Nigeria’s senior women’s cricket coach, Leye Oyede, has expressed strong confidence that the Female Yellow Greens will advance to the global qualifiers for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The team is currently in a closed-camp training programme in Lagos, fine-tuning preparations ahead of the Africa Qualifiers scheduled to take place in Namibia from August 28 to September 7.

Speaking about Nigeria’s chances, Oyede said the team is well-positioned to make a breakthrough on the continental stage.

“I think we have a big chance at qualifying. Two teams from this stage will progress to the global qualifiers. If we put up a good fight, we can reach the semi-finals, which will secure qualification,” he stated.

Nigeria will open their campaign against Sierra Leone before facing hosts Namibia in their second match. Oyede believes those fixtures will be critical to the team’s success.

 “Namibia used to beat us, but we have recently beaten them, and that’s a big confidence boost. Every opponent now knows we’re not here just to participate. Our first two games will be crucial in pushing us towards our goal,” he added.

The squad list will be announced next week. Nigeria will compete alongside Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone in the qualifiers.

Only the top two teams will advance to the global qualifiers, which will determine the finalists for the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup in England. The tournament will be the tenth edition of the biennial event, featuring 12 qualifying teams divided into two groups of six, with the top two from each group progressing to the knockout stage.
